Kelly Ripa hobbled into Live! with Regis and Kelly this morning using crutches as she made her way to her seat.

'It looks much worse than it is," she said, launching into the story of what happened.

The condensed version: She had been having pain for several weeks and thought she had a torn muscle. So she went to see a doctor. An X-ray showed there was nothing wrong. "I was just there for the painkillers, let's face it!" she joked.

Then the doctor sent her for an MRI at the hospital. "There was a receiving line of Regis' former surgeons shaking my hand."

"It turns out I have a stress fracture in the femural neck of my right hip."

The doctor told her no exercise for 3 to 6 weeks. Ripa, who loves to run, take classes and work out, said, "Right away, I was like what? There must be a mistake!"

But, she added, "I don't need any surgery, I don't need anyting special done. I just have to sit down."

Regis then said he had a "medical tragedy" this weekend, too. He explained he was opening a package with a box cutter and "sliced" into his hand.

Ripa accused him of trying to one-up her. "You saw my crutches and you cut yourself backstage, didn't you!?"

He explained that he's on Plavix and aspirin and so the blood was "pouring out." He wound up at the hospital on Saturday night where he got "four, maybe five" stitches.
